“Bewitched,” the iconic TV show from the 1960s about a witch with a twitchy nose living in the suburbs, is about to return, but it’s not your parents’ Bewitched.
“Just before he recently departed ABC Studios to embark on a rich overall deal at Netflix, Black-ish creator Kenya Barris sold one last high-profile project to ABC: Bewitched, a single camera, interracial blended family comedy based on the popular 1960s sitcom of the same name,” Deadline reports.
In the new version, Samantha the witch is a black single mom who marries a white mortal bumbler, Darren.
Samantha will discover “that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America,” according to Deadline.
The original “Bewitched,” starring Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, ran for eight seasons, from 1964 to 1972. You can still see reruns on TV and on Hulu.
“The pilot will be Sony’s third try at a Bewitched series remake in the past decade. Previous attempts at CBS in 2011-12 and NBC in 2014 ended up not going forward. It was also remade as a 2005 feature film starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote.
But we kinda’ agree with “Louis,” who posted a single-word rection on Twitter.
