British Police Thwart Islamist Plot to Assassinate Theresa May

Two alleged Islamists will appear in court today to face charges of plotting to bomb Downing Street and assassinate the British prime minister Theresa May.

Sky News reports today that it was latest in a series of terror plots that police and MI5 prevented this year. The plan to kill Theresa May follows the Manchester bombing in May, which claimed the lives of 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert; and the London Bridge knife-and-vehicle attack in June, which killed 11 people.

“I understand that the head of MI5, Andrew Parker, briefed Cabinet ministers today (Tuesday), such is the seriousness of what they believed they have uncovered,” reports Sky News correspondent Martin Brunt.

“It is in essence an extreme Islamist suicide plot against Downing Street. Essentially police believe that the plan was to launch some sort of improvised explosive device at Downing Street and in the ensuing chaos attack and kill Theresa May,” said the reporter, adding that the case was pursued over the last several weeks by Scotland Yard , MI5, and West Midlands Police.

“It came to a head last week with the arrest of two men, by armed police, who were charged with preparing acts of terrorism,” said the reporter.

The alleged terrorists, Naa’imur Zakariyah Rahman, 20, and Mohammed Aqib Imran, 21, will appear in court on terror charges Wednesday morning.
