BREAKING: Trump Finally Endorses Roy Moore

First thing Monday morning, President Donald Trump finally endorsed Alabama Senate Republican candidate Roy Moore, tweeting:

While the president had signaled his opposition to Democrat Doug Jones for Senate in Alabama, he had not fully or openly signaled support for Roy Moore. He’d stated that Moore had denied allegations regarding sexual misconduct, but he hadn’t openly endorsed the candidate, who has been dogged by claims that he sexually molested both a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl. Polls show a majority of Alabama Republicans don’t believe the allegations.

Trump’s endorsement will certainly reopen moral questions surrounding the GOP Party: it’s not usual for the president to openly back a candidate accused of molestation.

Democrats who believe that this will be an albatross on Trump are missing the 2016 campaign, when Democrats’ own penchant for backing those credibly accused of sexual crimes up to and including rape came back to inoculate Trump himself against accusations of sexual abuse.

Other Republicans, though, could pay a price for Moore winning the seat and remain in the Senate: he could become every Senate Republican’s unofficial running mate if he is seated, as he surely will be given Democrats’ refusal to oust Senator Al Franken (D-MN), who has admitted to groping women without their permission.
