Matt Lauers fall from grace continues every day as new details and accusations come out. Here is what you need to know.
Rumored Affair with Natalie Morales in 2016
Back in 2016, rumors that Lauer had an affair with his then-co-host Natalie Morales surfaced. It was during the time that Morales proclaimed that she was leaving Today for Access Hollywood. The rumors started as some kind of feud between Lauer and Morales and turned into full-fledged affair rumors shortly thereafter.
Just about everyone thought that Morales, who became a staple at Today, was leaving the show because of some sort of rift with Lauer. Although the two maintained a professional relationship over the years, some people couldn’t figure out why Morales was leaving and many just didn’t want to believe that she was making the move because it was a big step in her career.
“There’s speculation it’s one of the reasons why she’s moving . . . Matt didn’t want to work with her. There’s an awkwardness between Matt and Natalie . . . He protected her for a long time and now it seems like something has gone awry,” an insider told Page Six at the time.
It didn’t take long for these feud rumors to turn into something more. Morales and Lauer both released statements in an effort to debunk the rumors quickly.
2. His issues with Ann Curry and was charged for her firing
In 2012, a scandal involving Lauer and Today anchor Ann Curry surfaced. In June of that year, Curry left Today, shocking fans of the show. Several reports indicated that Curry didn’t get along with her co-hosts, namely Lauer and Katie Couric.
However, speculation mounted that there was something even deeper between Curry and Lauer. The two didn’t have a good relationship — to say the least. They “barely spoke” outside of the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Curry, who became very emotional on the air, insisted she writes her own copy, saying she wanted to ‘speak from the heart.’ While some at NBC believe she ‘purposefully self-destructed to damage both Lauer and the show,’ Curry ‘cried the entire way” to the airport after her final show. And the situation remained awkward. When she asked if she could send a note of sympathy to Robin Roberts, who was taking a leave of absence from GMA to get treatment for MDS, NBC execs told her no, ‘afraid she was trying to aid the enemy.’ In late July, she refused to appear alongside Guthrie on the air, as she believed that Bell might have been “trying to exploit the event for image repair.”
3. His wife filed for divorce in 2006 citing “endangers the physical and mental well-being…”
While pregnant with their third child in September of 2006, Roque filed for divorce, citing behavior by Lauer so egregious that it “endangers the physical and mental well-being of [Annette] so as to render it unsafe and improper” for the two to remain living in the same home. The papers went on to say that Roque endured “continual mental abuse” from Lauer. He countered in his own response by saying “any ‘cruel and inhuman treatment’ he may have exhibited was ‘provoked’ by his wife.”.
She reportedly withdrew the lawsuit three weeks after filing and was pregnant with the couple’s third child at the time, according to Business Insider.
4. It’s unlikely she wasn’t already aware of Lauer’s deception
Reports from Radar Online have tied Lauer to possible extramarital affairs with celebrity chef Giada de Laurentiis, former Today Show colleague Natalie Morales, and Good Morning America host Lara Spencer.
Multiple other outlets have similarly reported that Lauer’s proclivity for cheating on his wife of 19 years was widely known. As reported in People Magazine, “’He regularly cheated on his wife,’ one source claims. ‘Everyone knew. His wife lives in the Hamptons and he lives in the city, but we never heard he made unwanted moves.’ A former Today staffer echoes the first source’s claims, telling PEOPLE, “Everyone on staff knew he cheated regularly on his wife.”
5. His wife has jetted off to another country amid new accusations
Matt Lauer’s wife has reportedly left their New York home and jetted to her native country the Netherlands amid the bombshell sexual misconduct allegations against the former “Today” show co-host.
Annette Roque, a former model, was last spotted at their home in the Hamptons, Long Island, Wednesday, the same day NBC News announced they were terminating the “Today” show co-host for “inappropriate sexual behavior.
Roque has left for her family’s home near Amsterdam. It was not clear if the couple’s three children went with their mother or remained in New York.
Roque, who has been married to Lauer for 20 years, has not released a statement or comment regarding her husband’s termination and alleged sexual misconduct.
