Liberal college students at Leigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, started a Change.org petition to have President Donald Trump’s honorary degree revoked. They feel as though Trump’s policies contradict the goals and values of the university.
Trump goes against the grain according to Leigh University Students
One of the main “principles” the university adopted was the promise to “maintain an inclusive and equitable community” that is founded on the principles of “unity and respect,” something petition signers feel Trump is actively working against.
“These principles are antithetical to the behaviors and statements of Donald Trump during his presidency and on the campaign trail,” the petition stated.
Contradicting principles between Trump and University claimed
According to the petition, Trump’s policies are contradictory to the university’s principles, especially when it relates to immigration and banning transgenders from serving in the military.
“Trump does not confer dignity to groups like Mexicans and Mexican-Americans by referring to them as ‘rapists’ and ‘bad hombres,’” the petition said. “…Trump has made it clear that he does not support or promote the open expression of these members’ individuality. It is entirely hypocritical for Trump to express support for these members during his campaign while simultaneously declaring it a ‘big favor’ to the military by removing their right to serve.”
Revoke Trump’s honorary degree
The over 20,000 petition signers feel that Trump has rejected diversity, which “does not reflect Lehigh University’s values.”
“Allowing Donald Trump to retain his honorary degree represents a hollow and superficial ideological commitment from Lehigh to these principles,” the petition stated.
