Vogue’s August 2017 cover features model Gigi Hadid and her boyfriend, former One Direction singer Zayn Malik, but it’s coming under some heavy fire from the actual “gender fluid” community for portraying the heterosexual couple as “gender fluid” simply because they borrow each other’s clothes on occasion.
The article states: “Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik Are Part of a New Generation Embracing Gender Fluidity.”
The magazine even apologized on Friday, telling Buzzfeed in a statement, “The story was intended to highlight the impact the gender-fluid, non-binary communities have had on fashion and culture. We are very sorry the story did not correctly reflect that spirit – we missed the mark. We do look forward to continuing the conversation with greater sensitivity.”
Sure it was a stretch, but in fairness the pair did talk about wearing each other’s clothing in the issue, with Malik admitting to borrowing his girlfriend’s Anna Suit shirt and Hadid stating that she “shops in his closet.”
“It’s not about gender. It’s about, like, shapes. And what feels good on you that day. And anyway, it’s fun to experiment,” said Hadid. “One day you can be this, and another day you can do that.”
“If Zayn’s wearing a tight shirt and tight jeans and a big, drapey coat. I mean—I’d wear that, too. It’s just about, Do the clothes feel right on you?” the model added.
In the cover photo, Malik’s Gucci blazer is bedazzled.
Malik added, “With social media, the world’s gotten very small and it can seem like everyone’s doing the same thing. Gender, whatever—you want to make your own statement. You know? You want to feel distinct.”
According to Vogue: “The line that has long stood between a man and a woman’s wardrobe has been slowly disappearing over the last few years. Right now a genderquake is taking root on the runway, and this month’s Vogue cover stars are part of a new generation embracing the idea with open arms.”
Which then drew plenty of fire from social media users upset at the jump to conclusions:
