An alien accused of stabbing her four young children and their father to death yesterday in Georgia made a bizarre court appearance today, smiling and denying legal representation.
According to The Gwinnett Daily Post, Isabel Martinez is facing “six counts of aggravated assault, five counts of murder and five counts of malice murder she faces for the stabbing deaths of her husband Martin Romero, 33, and children Isabel Martinez, 10, Dacota Romero, 7, Dillian Romero, 4, and Axel Romero, 2.”
The outlet states that, as a judge told Martinez that the court could appoint a lawyer to defend her against those charges, the 33-year-old shook her head repeatedly and wagged her finger, insisting that she would defend herself.
“My attorney is the people that we’re fighting for,” she said. “That’s the hope. It’s always the hope, because that’s the last thing that dies. You are the hope of the world, each one of you.”
Adding to the bizarreness of it all, Martinez wore a smile through much of the proceedings. At one point, she got up from her seat and kneeled on the floor with outstretched arms.
When an officer in the room instructed her to get back into her seat, she did so – while smiling and giving a thumbs up to a nearby camera.

According to The Gwinnett Daily Post, Martinez will appear back in court on July 20th.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly has a detainer on her. The immigration status of her victims is unclear.
According to Time Magazine, police found the four deceased kids and their father in a home outside Atlanta early Thursday.
The outlet states that a fifth child, a 9-year-old, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

WSB-TV, meanwhile, reports that “police believe the killings occurred between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.”
The outlet further quotes neighbors as stating that Martinez had been depressed over her father’s recent death “but otherwise seemed to be a loving mother and wife.”
Martinez plans to defend herself against six counts of aggravated assault, five counts of murder and five counts of malice murder she faces for the stabbing deaths of her husband Martin Romero, 33, and children Isabel Martinez, 10, Dacota Romero, 7, Dillian Romero, 4, and Axel Romero, 2.
Martinez is also accused of stabbing Diana Romero, 9, who survived the attack. As of Friday, the girl was in stable, but serious condition at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
