What is the Nuclear Option?

So what is this nuclear option we hear about on the news? The senate may have to uses this nuclear option to approve the supreme court pick that President Trump has proposed. This is a change in the Senate rules because some Democrats have vowed to block the Gorsuch pick. The Democrats on the hill actually plan filibuster, which has been around since the 1800’s to give the minority in the US Senate a little bit of power. The nuclear option will abolish this filibuster when it comes to supreme court confirmations. 60 Senators is the majority needed to confirm any supreme court pick such as Gorsuch, currently as it stands there is 52 Republicans in the Senate. While the high majority their still shy of the needed 60 number. As the rules stand, democrats would be able to currently block this confirmation with a filibuster. What is the filibuster? It’s simply talking, and talking, and talking and talking until 60 Senators decide to change the topic. The Nuclear option would change the rules to a simply majority vote wins, handing the nomination very simply to Judge Gorsuch.

“In 2013, Democratic then-Majority Leader Harry Reid used this technique to force a reduction in the threshold for cloture on executive and judicial posts. In doing so, Reid and the Democrats altered the plain meaning of a written rule without giving the minority an opportunity to filibuster the change.Supreme Court nominations were excluded from Reid’s 2013 move, because even some Democrats thought that super-majority cloture should be preserved for such important posts. But it’s only a matter of time before the Supreme Court exception is eliminated. Democrats did not initiate the nuclear option for Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, in 2016. McConnell, on the other hand, is likely to pull the trigger if need be to win confirmation for Gorsuch.”

While most Senate Democrats are estimated to be in favor of the filibuster on Judge Gorsuch, there are still a few hold outs who may just vote in the affirmative of his nomination. It’s a shame that we’ve come to this point in the process. The unfounded discontent for President Trump has grown rapidly with incessant minority obstructionism. The Party of the Democrats still have not come to terms with the fundamental rebuke of their beliefs as the nation voted out almost 1000 Liberal government post nationwide and still cant fathomed the loss of the poster child they couldn’t drag across the finish by out spending 5 to 1, Hillary Clinton. Their downward spiral still hasn’t found rock bottom.
